Summer safety starts with simple habits

Summer brings longer days, warmer weather, and more opportunities to spend time outdoors. Whether it is enjoying a walk, tending to a garden, or visiting with family and friends, the season offers many ways to stay active. Taking a few simple precautions can help older adults enjoy the summer safely.

Hydration is Key

Staying hydrated is one of the most important ways to prevent heat-related illnesses. As we age, our sense of thirst may decrease, making it easier to become dehydrated. Drinking water throughout the day and choosing foods with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers and oranges, can help keep the body hydrated.

Use Sunscreen

When heading outside, wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher helps protect against harmful UV rays and should be applied before going outdoors and reapplied as needed. Whenever possible, plan outdoor activities during the morning or evening, when temperatures are typically cooler.

Stay Social

Summer is also a wonderful time to check in with family, friends, and neighbours. A quick phone call or visit can help ensure loved ones stay cool, hydrated, and comfortable during periods of hot weather.

At Omni Quality Living, the health, safety, and well-being of our residents are our priority year-round. By taking a few simple steps to stay cool, hydrated, and protected from the sun, everyone can enjoy a safe and healthy summer.
